Hello! Claire here, at your service!
Originally from Grenoble, I, Claire, started dancing as an adult about fifteen years ago, when I moved to Paris, where I now live. My dance journey has led me to explore many different worlds, meet lots of people, and visit unexpected places. As my passion for dance grew, so too did my interest in the sociology and pedagogy of dance.
In 2017, I decided to start a blog to document what I was observing and thinking about the various dance scenes. As a dancer, first of all – I mainly do bal folk dances, but also tango, blues, Brazilian forró, with occasional forays into lindy hop, west coast swing and salsa. As a teacher, too – I’ve been running workshops for several years now, mostly focusing on couple dances. And finally, as a volunteer – I’ve spent plenty of time helping out at the bar, carpooling, doing artist catering and helping organise events with my friends from Paris Bal Folk. I’ve also tried my hand at DJing blues nights and getting involved in beginner introductions as a volunteer.
About this blog
I’ve always enjoyed writing, though not always regularly. There are a few blogs about dance out there, but I wanted to share my own perspective as a dancer, and to commit to a more inclusive and feminist approach to dance. I have a few convictions, and I think more and more people share them. It’s encouraging not to feel alone in your way of seeing dance.
I’m a strong advocate for ELEF dancing, co-leading, active participation of followers in dance, inclusivity for all types people, and kindness between dancers. I also wanted to compare the different dance communities. Confronting different habits and norms is also a way to discover the best ideas and good practices from each scene!
This being said, I’m not a sociologist – what I share here are personal, experience-based reflections. I’m a social dancer, which means my main goal is to go out dancing, enjoy the moment, and meet new people.
Happy reading, everyone!
